TrueFire’s All-Around Rock TUTORIAL

TrueFire's All-Around Rock TUTORIAL

TrueFire’s All-Around Rock TUTORIAL

All Around Rock is a collection of TrueFire lessons curated by Total Guitar Editor, Chris Bird. Chris’ selection of lessons from top TrueFire educators is designed to help you take your rock rhythm playing to the next level.

”For most gigging guitarists, rhythm playing is our bread and butter. Though a blazing solo gives you a moment in the spotlight, the simple truth is that most of our time is spent playing rhythm.

Most rock and pop songs are vocal-led and most guitar parts are based around strummed chords, ostinato riffs or simple melodic figures. With that in mind, I’ve compiled this selection of lessons for intermediate level players on the rhythm and riffing styles of some of rock’s greatest guitarists.

The course kicks off with Jeff Scheetz’s ‘Solidify’ lesson, a juicy funk-rock riff that’ll help you get your groove on, Jimi Hendrix and Tom Morello style. It’s all about feel and keeping your pick hand moving constantly as you change between the E7 triad, the muted stabs and the single-note lines.

And if you’re really feeling that funky single-note vibe, I recommend you check out Jeff’s ‘Tommy Boy’ lesson too. Inspired by the late, great Tommy Bolin, these blues-scale ideas can be applied in most funk-rock styles, from classic to contemporary.

Staying on the funk-rock theme, I’ve also chosen Jeff’s ‘Octave Slip’ lesson, which reminds me of early 90s Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jane’s Addiction, but octave shapes are often used in punk and other styles too.

Next, I want to draw your attention to ‘Rokken’. Drawing on some obvious George Lynch influences, this is a fantastic lesson on power-chord riffs and how employing a few extra shapes can elevate them.

Angus Clark’s ‘Nu Metal Ostinato’ lesson gives you an alternative take on the power-chord theme, adding melodic notes into the mix. Nu metal it may be, but Angus is outlining a concept that can be found throughout the history of metal, used by everyone from Black Sabbath to Mastodon and beyond. There’s a lot of mileage in this idea.

I also wanted to include a tutorial that would help you improve your picking technique, and Jeff’s Randy Rhoads style lesson ‘I Know’ is a great workout. There are four bars of music but the main part of the exercise is a mere three notes long – the repeating ‘gallop riff’ played in bars 1 to 3.

I recommend you use TrueFire’s speed tool here. Either practice within your comfort zone or push the tempo to develop your speed picking – it’s up to you.

These are just a few of the highlights from my curated collection and there’s plenty more to learn once you get inside, whatever style of rock you play. Every lesson is self-contained, so feel free to dip in and choose the ones that interest you the most. Let’s get rocking!”

Who better than the top editors of our cherished guitar magazines to lend their eyes, ears and guitar acumen to help guide how we put our precious practice time to optimal use? Thanks Chris!
You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson.

You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are also included to work with on your own.

TrueFire's Born In The USA TUTORIAL

TrueFire’s Born In The USA TUTORIAL

The Ultimate Roots-Americana Course
Born In The USA is a collection of TrueFire lessons curated by Guitar World Editor-in-Chief Damian Fanelli. Damian’s selection of lessons from top TrueFire educators is designed to give you the tools you’ll need to switch back and forth with confidence when treading those most American of genres — bluegrass, country, and blues (and almost everything in between)!

”I’ve played a myriad of styles during my decades of guitarism, but what really gives me goosebumps these days (like, literally while I’m playing guitar) is a crafty bluegrass run or country lick that can be incorporated into a rock or blues solo — or vice versa. Luckily, TrueFire is teaming with lessons by talented guitarists who can help you become an “inter-genre-ational” player!

We kick things off with Tyler Grant introducing some handy bluegrass licks in G (“the bluegrassiest of all keys”). It’s easy to imagine where you’d “go from here” while building a solo over I-IV-V changes (or similar changes in that neck of the woods) when starting with these licks. I suggest checking out Tyler Grant’s other lessons — if only to see how perfectly level he holds his Martin!

From bluegrass, we take the very short trip to country guitar — with Jason Loughlin as our guide. Now we’re getting into that goosebump-inducing stuff I mentioned in my intro — clever, magnetic licks that make longtime pentatonic players scream, “I need to know how to do that!” Which is funny because Study 1 in particular is very pentatonic indeed. When I hear these licks, especially Study 2, I picture them with some nice slap-echo in a rockabilly setting, where they’d sound equally killer.

Then we make a pit stop — and catch our breath — somewhere between country and blues with Tim Sparks. You might want to lose the pick, by the way; we’ve entered fingerstyle country!

Then it’s onto one of the finest blues players on TrueFire, Matt Schofield, who — besides showing you some infinitely steal-able licks — delves into the important concept of playing over the changes in a blues progression, something that separates the spine-tingling from random tinkling!

You already might’ve suspected Andy Wood was immensely talented based on his old “Betcha Can’t Play This” videos on GW’s YouTube channel — and now he leaves no doubt! In these lessons, Andy takes us back where we started and shows you how to add some country to your rock and blues licks. If you like these videos, be sure to check out the lessons where he shows you how to add some rock flavor to your blues.”

TrueFire's Creative Blues Performance TUTORIAL

TrueFire’s Creative Blues Performance TUTORIAL

The Tastiest Blues Lessons on TrueFire
Creative Blues Performance is a collection of TrueFire lessons curated by Guitar Techniques Editor Neville Marten. Neville’s selection of lessons from top TrueFire educators is designed to build on your blues rhythm and lead technique and broaden your breadth of knowledge and ability.

”I’ve selected lessons from Corey Congilio’s 50 Blues Rhythms. We all know how important rhythm guitar is in blues. But even though we spend the vast majority of our time NOT soloing, many people still choose to give their rhythm playing a back seat. Corey Congilio’s excellent 50 Blues Rhythms provides you with an instant bag of great accompanying ideas that will make you the guy people want to jam with.

One of the world’s classiest blues players, Matt Schofield is brilliant at putting across his ideas in simple to understand sound bytes. Matt has designed his course Blues Speak: Playing The Changes to help you navigate the chords, infusing your blues with jazzy inflections that will make your playing sound cool and sophisticated.

Corey Congilio’s Hip Blues: Outside Lines is the perfect follow-up to Matt’s ‘Changes’ course, and takes things a step further. Corey elaborates on the idea of using ‘outside’ notes to create ear-grabbing licks that bring tension and excitement, before resolving back ‘inside’ to bring welcome resolution.

Then there’s Josh Smith’s Blue Highways. One of today’s most exciting guitarists, Josh melds blues, country, jazz, swing and gospel ideas into a style that’s both exciting and modern. In this course Josh shares some of his ideas and approaches, perfect for adding to your own repertoire of licks and providing a wealth of ‘lightbulb’ moments.”

TrueFire’s Going Outside TUTORIAL

TrueFire's Going Outside TUTORIAL

TrueFire’s Going Outside TUTORIAL

Exploring the Borders Between Blues and Jazz
Going Outside is a collection of TrueFire lessons curated by Guitarist Editor Jamie Dickson. Jamie’s selection of lessons from top TrueFire educators compiles everything you need to build on your blues playing and reach jazz nirvana.

”Many guitarists cut their teeth on blues but struggle to transition to playing jazz, which demands a fluent grasp of music theory and thorough knowledge of the fretboard. If this sounds like you, take heart – TrueFire has some excellent lessons on how to start playing blues in a more sophisticated, harmonically aware way that will start you on the road to playing fully fledged jazz in simple steps that build the framework of knowledge you need piece by piece.

Here’s my favorites – there are plenty more to explore on the site but I’ve gained so much from the lessons below that I can really recommend them as a starting point for blues improvisers who want to haul themselves out of the minor pentatonic rut and start playing with more confidence, musicality and freedom.

Jeff Scheetz’s Street Theory For Guitarists is first up. Playing jazz is about much more than merely ‘learning theory’ but a sound foundation in the rules of music is essential. This can put newcomers off, but Jeff removes the daunting, jargon-heavy aspect of learning music theory and strips each lesson back to the core ideas you need to grasp.

Jeff’s practical, friendly approach is a real breath of fresh air and I particularly liked his exploration of the humble major scale – often skipped over by new players as being a bit boring and ‘vanilla’ but actually the foundation of nearly everything you might care to play on guitar. The course covers a lot of ground but this is a great example of its unpretentious, easy-to-follow style and an invaluable lesson in itself.

Tim Lerch is a stellar jazz player but also a great educator who understands the value of getting the basics right before advancing to more complex ideas. His Jazz Blues Foundations course is tailor-made for players who want to go beyond flogging the minor pentatonic scale to death and learn to really ‘play over the changes’ as a jazz player would.

Tim is brilliant at explaining how to do this in easy pieces, but I also marveled at how good his phrasing is – even (or perhaps especially) when playing really simple licks. Listen how stylishly he articulates each lick in this etude – each one is a study in unhurried sophistication. You don’t need to play fast when you can play this good. A must for blues improvisers.

A bona fide session legend whose playing graces hundreds of hit records by artists ranging from Joni Mitchell to Steely Dan, Larry Carlton is the epitome of taste and sophistication on guitar – and he is a master of jazz-blues. That’s why it’s all the more surprising to find that some of his most valuable advice on playing in this genre is mind-blowingly simple.

The essence of it is this: form a phrase, take a breath, form another phrase that elaborates on the previous one and develop your solos from there. In other words: say something, don’t gabble, and people will stop and listen. In fact, every guitarist should take five minutes to watch this ‘lightbulb-moment’ advice from a superb course led by a legendary musician.

Jazz doesn’t just mean players like Wes Montgomery and Barney Kessel – it also encompasses the more rock-edged fusion of the 70s. And since rock was born of blues there’s plenty of room for inspiration for blues-to-jazz improvisers here too, and some really head-turning techniques to master too.

I especially like James Hogan’s 50 Licks course on this subject which is packed with fiery, creative licks inspired by legendary players such as Mike Stern, Jeff Beck, John McLaughlin and many more. I’ve picked out one in particular as a great crossover blues / jazz / rock lick that will definitely grab people’s attention. Here Hogan has picked out an absolute gem of a lick from Larry Carlton’s outro solo on the Steely Dan track Kid Charlemagne. Every player should know this.

I’ve long been a fan of Corey Congilio’s TrueFire lessons, which are always useful, exciting and show how licks can be used in everyday musical scenarios. Here he ventures into jazz blues territory with his take on the slippery style of the wonderful Jimmy Herring – a truly virtuosic player from the US jam-band scene who is an absolute monster on the fretboard. This lick is challenging but a really satisfying intro to ‘outside’ playing with a bluesy foundation

No introduction to the art of jazz-blues guitar would be complete without a lesson from the master, Robben Ford. In his course on using the diminished scale (a scale formed by the sequence: Tone – Semitone – Tone – Semitone – Tone – Semitone – Tone) he introduces us to the ear-opening possibilities of using the edgy, ‘outside’ vibe of diminished licks to powerful effect in the jazz-blues arena. If you want to learn some licks that really add to your palette of colors and creative options while soloing, you should check out this ‘Straight Up Blues In A’ study piece from this illuminating course.”

The Bridge to Jazz TUTORIAL

The Bridge to Jazz TUTORIAL

The Bridge to Jazz TUTORIAL

Jazz Techniques for Blues and Rock Players
The Bridge to Jazz is a collection of TrueFire lessons curated by Guitar World Senior Music Editor Jimmy Brown. Jimmy’s selection of lessons from top TrueFire educators is designed for blues and rock players who want to explore and integrate elements of jazz into their playing.

”Ever since my early days as a self-taught rock guitarist who went on to study jazz and music theory in college, I’ve always been excited by the sound of harmonically and rhythmically sophisticated music and guitar playing that also embraces the energy and swagger of rock, blues and r&b/funk.

This collection of TrueFire video lessons from various teachers, some of whom are also world-renowned recording artists, offer a nice variety of well-presented instruction in the realm of playing straight-ahead jazz and jazz-influenced rock and blues guitar, featuring approaches that are both inspiring and effective.

Probably the best reference point for getting into jazz is to approach it from its most closely related style — blues — and the first step is to learn some cool ways to “jazz up” the basic 12-bar blues progression’s I-IV-V chord changes with colorful chord substitutions and melodic lines that go beyond the all-too-familiar pentatonic approach that most blues and rock players take, for lack of deeper harmonic understanding.

In the lessons from master guitarist and teacher Tim Lerch, he tastefully demonstrates how to both solo and play rhythm, or “comp,” over a jazzy blues progression in the key of C with a medium-tempo shuffle groove and clearly breaks down the various technical and theoretical devices he employs in his well-crafted and tasteful licks.

Topics presented include such useful devices as “uptown”-style, horn-section-like chord voicings, substituting ii-V-I changes for the basic V-IV move in bars 9 and 10, targeting chord tones in a melody using arpeggios, adding decorative melodic ornaments and chromatic approach tones.

When it comes to learning the art of jazz improvisation, the old saying “you have to crawl before you can walk and run” certainly applies! In the batch of progressively structured lessons I’ve chosen from the great jazz guitarist and master educator Frank Vignola, he offers a sure-fire method for making sure your melodic lines relate to the underlying chords in a pleasing way and does so in a refreshingly clear and straightforward presentation, without overwhelming you with non-essential music theory.

The approach involves targeting chord tones, such as the 3rd, 5th or 7th, whenever there’s the chord change, and using related scale tones and chromatics to smoothly transition from each of these cornerstone notes to the next. Using the chord progression from the first section of the evergreen jazz standard “Autumn Leaves,” the guitarist shows you how to musically “connect the dots,” so to speak.

By learning this effective and useful methodical approach to melody making, you can then apply it to countless other chord progressions and standard tunes and learn how to improvise a solo with confidence in knowing that you’ll be hitting the right notes.

The group of four interrelated lessons from Robben Ford feature the legendary fusion guitarist offering an exciting and insightful breakdown of his rhythm and lead playing approaches and techniques on the soulful, funky jazz-rock tune “Hebb Tide.”

Playing along to a well-produced rhythm-section backing track, Robben first demonstrates then discusses how he approaches playing over the tune’s repeating four-chord progression and how to make the most out of it by using numerous voicings and rhythmic phrasing variations.

Emphasizing chord knowledge as the foundation for crafting well-informed melodies, Robben presents solid approaches to things like comping, voice-leading and building a solo that’s more harmonically connected to the underlying progression and colorful than what most blues and rock guitarists would conceive of doing using the typical pentatonic-only approach of merely “playing the key” and not actively acknowledging the chord changes in their lines.

And coming from an electric blues background and being right at home playing a solid-body guitar with an overdriven lead tone, Ford demonstrates how to do this while also applying elements like string bending, vibrato and decorative finger slides to add flair and dynamic expression to melodic lines while hitting the sweet notes.

Using his funky blues tune “In the Middle” as a highly appealing teaching vehicle, world-renowned jazz-fusion guitarist Oz Noy shares his brilliantly eclectic signature approach to “inside-outside” melodic line construction in these related videos.

Featuring four full 12-bar choruses of soloing with a bold, overdriven Strat tone over the tune’s medium-tempo groove, Oz tastefully demonstrates how to combine sexy blues-rock-style lead phrasing with a variety of inventive harmonic and melodic phrasing twists, using such creative musical tactics and devices as inserting chromatic tones into the Mixolydian mode, adding upper and lower neighbor tones, employing arpeggio substitutions, and developing and varying rhythmic motifs. The result is a highly entertaining and informative rock solo with some decidedly jazzy twists.”

Jay Cartere FL Studio RnB Trap Beat Mixing Template

Jay Cartere FL Studio RnB Trap Beat Mixing Template WAV FLP

Jay Cartere FL Studio RnB Trap Beat Mixing Template

How to stop wasting hours on mixes that sound unprofessional
If you suffer from ruining your beats with mediocre mixing…
If you waste hours on your mixes that end up sounding thin and cold…
If your beats are scaring away artists because your mixes sound unprofessional…

Then this message is just for you. Here’s why…
You can create professional-quality beats fast…without all the headaches.
And you need to realize, there’s a cost to not dealing with this…

If You Ignore It, It Just Gets Worse

What most people do when they can’t get their RnB Trap beats mixed to a professional standard is they:

  •  Watch dozens of YouTube tutorials about mixing
  •  Hire someone with more experience to mix their beats for them
  •  Mix their beats using trial and error

But for most people, none of that works – here’s why:

  •  Most YouTube tutorials are NOT focused on teaching you how to mix and master RnB Trap beats. Meaning the information you get is not always helpful
  •  YouTube is full of people who are sharing bad information. You’ll still need to spend a lot of time working out what information is useful and what info is trash
  •  Hiring someone to mix 1 beat or song is cool. But, hiring someone to mix every beat/song you make will get very expensive, quickly. You gotta have big pockets to keep this up
  •  Mixing your beats with no clear direction will keep you releasing wack mixes and wasting tons of time. The time cost of doing this isn’t worth it and you’ll keep making the same mistakes and bad habits

And what happens if you just do nothing? If you just keep doing what you’ve been doing?

Nothing much.
No sales. No downloads. No customers.
Eventually you give up on this music production thing and you desperately try to hide your failures from your family and friends…
You pretend you never uploaded a beat at all…and so does everyone else…
No good.

How I Make Professional-Quality Beats FAST
I’ve got an answer that works. Here’s the story:
I used to be in the same position as you – I HATED my mixes.
Every beat I made sounded artificial and cheesy.
Cold and thin.

My drums didn’t hit hard. My melodies were muddy.
My beats sounded wack…
I needed to find a way to add warmth to my beats…I needed to make my music sound like MUSIC…and not sound like something I just sharted out a digital tube…
Easier said than done.
But here’s the thing:

I dedicated over 10 YEARS to understanding the concepts behind mixing…
I went to university to study music production…
I spent countless hours fiddling with settings and getting everything to sound just right…
Banging drums…
No muddiness…
Beats as warm as a hot cup of coffee…

Then it hit me:

  • What if I could start EVERY project with the right settings…saving me a LOT of time?
  • What if every beat I made was already half mixed?
  • What if I turn this into a template that other RnB Trap producers could use to make their mixes sound professional?
  • And that’s how I created this RnB Trap Beat Mixing template!

It Works For The Best Producers, And It Will Work For You
Here’s what using this template did for me:
I used to start every new FL project from scratch…
Adding my samples one by one.
Connecting my channels to mixer tracks…
Adding the EQs and other effects.

But, I don’t do that anymore…
Now I just open up my RnB Trap Beat template and start creating a chord progression…

I spend less time getting my settings right and more time actually creating music…
This template has sped up my mixing process 10x at LEAST…
My beats are almost mixed before I even get to the mixing process.
And, when I’m at the mixing process, all I need to do is adjust a few levels and make some small tweaks…
Now I complete a mix and master of a beat in minutes instead of HOURS.

Finally, It’s Your Turn

When you get this RnB Trap Beat Mixing Template today, you’ll get the key to:

  •  Mix your beats to a PROFESSIONAL quality
  •  Start your new beats with them half-mixed already
  •  Make sure every element of your beat has its own space – getting rid of muddiness and making your 808s and kicks cut through the mix like a hot knife through butter

It all comes as part of:

  •  A FL Studio 20 Template file (Create and mix your RnB trap beats with the same template I use every day)
  •  All the settings I use to mix and master my beats (all the effects on the mixer have been loaded with my secret sauce)
  •  A FREE Drum Kit (Packed with samples that are great for creating RnB Trap beats)
  •  Instant digital download (after you pay, you’ll get the download link sent to your email address IMMEDIATELY)

You need these plug-ins to use this template properly:

  •  Izotope Ozone 8 (Mastering Plug-in)
  •  Seventh Heaven (Reverb)
