Elevator Music has endured many reputations eventually finding a permanent home as seemingly mundane ubiquitous background music throughout public spaces around the world. But the history of Elevator Music derives from very interesting beginnings. In 1934, Major General George Owen Squier developed a style of music called “Stimulus Progression” (or “musak”) for his company MUSAK designed to “humanize man-made environments where people work, shop, and recreate.” Music provided a sense of forwarding movement and mitigated tension, boredom, melancholy, and fatigue. It even became popular in the 1950s and 1960s including being introduced to the White House by President Dwight D. Eisenhower and used by NASA on space missions to soothe astronauts and help them focus.
The most popular theory about the origins of music on elevators though is that early elevators were terrifying, and people needed the music to calm their frazzled nerves. Next to roller coasters and airplanes, elevators were perceived by many as floating rooms of disequilibrium, inciting thoughts of motion sickness and snapping cables. Gentle background music helped to minimize that terror, particularly after elevators were automated in the 1920s without attendants to provide a sense of calm.
Splice took on the challenge of paying homage to this history while modernizing Elevator Music by combining it with different musical genres appropriate for a variety of contexts. Brought to you by composer Benjamin Balcom, this pack is replete with bossa nova, jazz, and minimalist electronic influences and is choc-full of easy listening sounds that you can sample in your lofi hip hop beat or tropical house rhythm. Expect a smooth combination of vibes, Rhodes, organs, percussion, simple drums, string pads, brassy pads, nylon guitar, and simple bass samples to add a calming vibe to your latest production. It’s time to de-stress, vibe out, and make Elevator Music cool again. Download the pack now.

Revolutions in American Music: Three Decades That Changed a Country & Its Sounds PDF
Michael Broyles, “Revolutions in American Music: Three Decades That Changed a Country and Its Sounds”
The story of how unexpected connections between music, technology, and race across three tumultuous decades changed American culture.
How did a European social dance craze become part of an American presidential election? Why did the recording industry become racially divided? Where did rock ’n’ roll really come from? And how do all these things continue to reverberate in today’s world?
In Revolutions in American Music, award-winning author Michael Broyles shows the surprising ways in which three key decades―the 1840s, the 1920s, and the 1950s―shaped America’s musical future. Drawing connections between new styles of music like the minstrel show, jazz, and rock ’n’ roll, and emerging technologies like the locomotive, the first music recordings, and the transistor radio, Broyles argues that these decades fundamentally remade our cultural landscape in enduring ways. At the same time, these connections revealed racial fault lines running through the business of music, in an echo of American society as a whole.
Through the music of each decade, we come to see anew the social, cultural, and political fabric of the time. Broyles combines broad historical perspective with an eye for the telling detail and presents a variety of characters to serve as focal points, including the original Jim Crow, a colorful Hungarian dancing master named Gabriel de Korponay, “Empress of the Blues” Bessie Smith, and the singer Johnnie Ray, whom Tony Bennett called “the father of rock ’n’ roll.” Their stories, and many others, animate Broyles’s masterly account of how American music became what it is today.
The Oxford Handbook of Technology & Music Education PDF
Few aspects of daily existence are untouched by technology. The learning and teaching of music is no exception, and arguably has been impacted as much or more than other areas of life. Digital technologies have come to affect music learning and teaching in profound ways, influencing everything from how we create, listen, share, consume, interact, and conceptualize musical practices and the musical experience.
For a discipline as entrenched in tradition as music education, this has brought forth myriad views on what does and should constitute music learning and teaching. In order to tease out and elucidate some of the salient problems, interests, and issues, this volume sought to critically situate technology in relation to music education from a variety of perspectives: historical, philosophical, socio-cultural, pedagogical, musical, economic, policy, and so on, organized around four broad themes: (1) Emergence and Evolution, (2) Locations and Contexts: Social and Cultural Issues, (3) Experiencing, Expressing, Learning and Teaching, and (4) Competence, Credentialing, and Professional Development. The editors solicited essays from 22 “Core Perspective” and 19 “Further Perspective” authors based on their potential to contribute a diversity of perspectives on technology and music education in terms of gender, theoretical perspective, geographical distribution, and relationship to the field.
The overall thrust was to provide contrasting perspectives and conversational voices rather than reinforce traditional narratives and prevailing discourses. The website http://ohotame.musedlab.org/ provides opportunities to participate and sustain the dialogue relating to technology and music education.
