Ask Video Music Theory 109 Music Theory for DAW Musicians TUTORIAL
Music Theory for DAW Musicians
Learning music theory is an excellent way to grow as a producer and musician. This course, by music teacher Joshua Carney, reveals how to apply music theory concepts in your music productions… without leaving the comfort of your DAW!
Learning music theory has many benefits: it lets you express your musical ideas more easily, it strengthens your communication with other musicians and can greatly improve your listening skills. In short, learning music theory lets you speak, write and understand the language of music. But like learning any new language, it can be tricky to know where to start, especially if you’ve never played a traditional musical instrument (like guitar, piano, etc.) and are using a DAW to create music. This is where this “Music Theory for DAW Musicians” course comes in. This course, specifically designed for DAW musicians and producers, is the missing link between learning your DAW and discovering music theory!
Joshua starts the course by explaining how to name and identify notes, both on the musical staff and in your DAW’s piano roll. He explains everything you need to know about accidentals (sharps and flats), tones and semitones. After teaching about pitch, he moves to rhythm. You learn all the different rhythm values and meters, and how they relate to grid editing.
With the help of the Circle of Fifths, you learn to build major and minor scales (including the melodic and harmonic minor scales) from scratch in the piano roll in all the different tonalities. You also discover how to build chords, create harmonies, create flowing chord progressions… and more!
So learn to connect the dots between your DAW and music theory concepts… Join Joshua Carney in this music theory journey now!

Orange Tree Samples Evolution Texas Twang KONTAKT
8.9 Gb
Evolution Texas Twang features a custom single cut Tele-style guitar with dual single-coil pickups. The bridge pickup gives you that nasally twang perfect for percussive chicken picking and bright crunchy tones, while the neck provides you with a juicy, full sound just right for mellower tones. Because we recorded both pickup signals separately you can dial in any blend of the pickups you want.
The guitar was performed and recorded by Chris Bullard, a seasoned session guitarist and emerging Country singer-songwriter. Chris Bullard’s experience as a touring artist in Texas and Nashville adds an authentic vibe to the guitar samples. The clarity and finesse of his guitar playing are audible in the many articulations included in the library, from picked playing to articulations particularly useful in Country music, such as finger plucked articulations for chicken picking technique.
The library was developed in collaboration with William Derganc, who oversaw the project’s development as well as editing the guitar samples and contributing factory presets. His attention to detail was invaluable, setting a high bar for the quality of the library.
The sample set has also been run through a distortion pedal as an enhanced signal. This distortion pedal, well-known among Country music guitarists, is modeled after the legendary warm, overdriven sound of a Trainwreck amp.
Evolution Texas Twang is outfitted with our Evolution guitar engine which provides you with a wealth of appointments: an innovative strumming pattern editor, automatic chord detection, and a robust effects engine. The library includes many factory presets for ready-to-use classic and modern Country electric guitar tones that fit right into the mix.
Key Features:
– Built-in effects engine for instantly-usable Country electric guitar tones.
– Adjustable pick position using our proprietary physical modeling technology.
– Powerful mapping system that lets you set how you want to trigger articulations, using conditions such as velocity ranges, MIDI CCs, latching and non-latching keyswitches, and more.
– Multitracking up to quadruple tracking.
Sampling specifications:
– 21 GB (compressed to 8.92 GB using the lossless NCW audio format) of 24-bit samples.
– Articulations such as sustains, palm mutes, mutes, natural harmonics, plucked open/muted articulations for “chicken picking”, plus special effects like string slaps, muted strums, and more.
– MIDI articulations for instant octaves, grace notes, buzz trills, whole-step slides, whole-step hammer-ons, and slides (velocity-based and tempo-synced).
– Legato samples for slides, hammer-ons, and pull-offs.
– The articulations have 3 dynamics, 2 pick directions (when applicable), and 2x round-robin.
Evolution Texas Twang is NKS-ready. The integration with the Native Kontrol Standard presents many benefits, both when using the library in the Komplete Kontrol software as well as in conjunction with Komplete Kontrol hardware, such as the Komplete Kontrol S-Series keyboards and Maschine.
In addition to Evolution Texas Twang being displayed in the Native Browser among your other Komplete Kontrol instruments, there are a variety of other benefits. For example, thanks to Native Instruments’ Native Map® technology, you can control the library’s various parameters directly through connected hardware right out of the box. Furthermore, the keyswitches and key ranges are shown using Light Guide, an innovative technology that displays the key colors directly on your Komplete Kontrol S-Series keyboard.
We recommend using Evolution Texas Twang with a Komplete Kontrol S-Series keyboard for the full experience. While not a requirement, you will be able to take advantage of the Native Kontrol Standard for an intuitive connection between software instruments and hardware.
Pallas is a Max for Live device that has been specifically designed to model all the grit, character, and charm of authentic analog sounds. Featuring eight-voice polyphony, Pallas is powered by three versatile oscillators. The device’s main two oscillators allow users to mix up to four waveforms (sine, triangle, square, and sawtooth, and an additional noise generator), while the third oscillator is a wavetable-based signal generator that can also be used as an additional LFO for modulation purposes.
Pallas uses the same modulation framework as Bengal (Max for Cats’ powerful semi-modular FM synthesizer) and provides many opportunities for users to sculpt their sounds: extensive envelope settings, two multimode resonant filters (with drive and morph functionality), two LFOs (one with morphable saw-triangle waves, pulse width, and phase retrigger), a ring modulator, and six native audio effects including delay, distortion, reverb, wavefold, frequency shift, and chorus. In addition, Pallas also includes a flexible eight-step sequencer that can be used as a signal modulator.
For those who like to dig deeper, Pallas’ semi-modular capabilities make this Max for Live device’s sonic possibilities practically limitless. Featuring a comprehensive virtual patch panel, users can create any number of custom signal and modulation chains simply by stringing virtual patch cords from square “output” sockets to round “input” sockets, making it easy for even beginners to have fun and get creative with Pallas’ modular components. In addition, the Packs features a large and carefully crafted Preset library that can provide a useful starting point when crafting new sounds.
Like Bengal, Pallas also features a visual control panel at its center. Switchable between three modes (Scope, Phase, and Spectrum), the visual panel gives users another way to see exactly what they are creating and how each patch point and knob turn along the way is affecting their sonic creation in real-time.
Additionally, Pallas offers a Remote Control option that allows for certain important functions of the synth can be controlled simply by using a modern web browser. Users can connect using another computer, an iPhone, iPad, Android phone, or just about any device that can browse the web: enter a simple URL into your browser and you can control Pallas from anywhere your wi-fi will allow you.
All of which makes Pallas just the latest indispensable device to come from the Max for Cats crew, continuously on a mission to bring modular versatility and new forms of fun, high quality sound to the Ableton platform.
Recorded on the same stage as our flagship libraries Jaeger and Cerberus, the TALOS series is the next addition to our ever-expanding range of orchestral sample libraries. All TALOS libraries are about big ensemble sizes that can go from soft and subtle to earth-shatteringly epic.
One of the main goals and challenges for the series was to create libraries that can go the full sonic range in a larger than life ensemble size but still retain all of their realism. We’ve ensured that the TALOS libraries not only blend perfectly with our other libraries (Jaeger, Cerberus, etc.) but truly sit well in a mix and enhance your writing experience.
For Volume One, we recorded a rich sounding 12 player horn ensemble. In addition to a wide range of standard articulations, we recorded real legato transitions, which in combination with our critically acclaimed legato script will allow you to play fantastically realistic melodic lines.
Legato articulations:
Legato (3 DYN, 1 RR)
Long articulations:
Sustained (3 DYN, 1 RR)
Short articulations:
Marcato Long (3 DYN, 5 RR)
Marcato Short (3 DYN, 5 RR)
Staccato (3 DYN, 5 RR)
Staccatissimo (3 DYN, 5 RR)
Rip (1 DYN, 2 RR)
Bend (1 DYN, 2 RR)
Double Tongue (1 DYN, 2 RR)
Triple Tongue (1 DYN, 2 RR)
Quadruple Tongue (1 DYN, 2 RR)

We developed Angelic Harp in collaboration with Guy Randle of Rosewood Recording Company, who engineered and oversaw the sampling session. Angelic Harp is an extensively sampled 47-string concert harp, played by harpist Alex Bigney from the Celtic group Kirkmount.
We always aim to recreate the playability of the real instrument as closely as possible. For example, each string on the harp is individually modeled, mimicking the monophonic nature of each string. This allows you to soften loud plucks with subsequent soft plucks. It also prevents the unnatural, excessive tonal build-up that many synthesized harps exhibit when playing glissandos and repeated notes. The adjustable preroll samples capture all the subtle fingernail noises that occur before the main pluck sound of the strings, adding a lot of depth and realism to the harp tone.
Features:
– Over 7 GB of 24-bit samples (compressed down to 2 GB using Kontakt’s lossless NCW format).
– 6 1/2 octave range with 4 dynamics and up to 7 alternating round-robin samples.
– Separately-controllable close and room mic signals.
– Glissando system for playing realistic harp glisses between notes.
– Harmonics articulation.
This product requires a total of 3.8 GB of free disk space in order to download and install the sample library. The total size of the download is 1.8 GB, and after installed the library occupies 2 GB.
