Culprate – Tentacle VIP (Mr. Bill Remix) (Ableton Live Template)

Culprate – Tentacle VIP (Mr. Bill Remix) (Ableton Live Template)

According to my emails, on the 12th of September, 2016 – I emailed John (Culprate) telling him I’d finished this Tentacle remix (of which I’d asked him for stems for a month or so earlier, because I loved the tune & just wanted to Mr. Bill’ify it) – and so there it laid, for around a year (slightly more actually) until now! Many talks happened on how we wanted to release this one, and in the end we saw a home for it on the Night Owl Collective’s newest compilation “Feel Trip Vol 3”.Upon making this decision I asked John if he’d be OK with me releasing the project file, and being the nice guy he is, he agreed. So here you have it! Enjoy ????

There’s a Pro-Q on “Channel 28” which is the “Synths 1 (Pianos)” group that I couldn’t freeze, as you cannot freeze groups. It is basically cutting 5dB from 200hz with a Q of 1.6, and boosting 11k by 2.5dB with a Q of 1 if you feel the need to recreate it using Live’s native EQ Eight or something, however I figured as far as educational purposes (or even remix purposes) go, it’s not that important.

There’s a Pro-Q on “Channel 63” which is the “Vocals (Bill + Culprate Vox)” group which is unfreezable unfortunately. It does only turn on during “Vox Drop 1” & “Piano Outro” though, so it won’t effect the whole tune + it’s just making things a little brighter & cutting some low frequencies at 185hz. For the sake of education or remixes, this isn’t too vital.

On “Channel 80” you’ll see a clip called “Culprate Vox Bus Render”, and note “Channel 79” is muted. This was due to an instance of “Uhbik-A” & “Pro-Q” being on this channel & the monitor state set
to “In”, rendering it unfreezable. I felt this was the best solution. Feel free to mute Channel 80 & unmute Channel 79 if you have these plug-ins.

“Return Channel A – Reverb” is unfreezable (as all return tracks are), and has an instance of “Valhalla Room” & “Pro-Q” on it, I’ve monitored the tune with the return channel both engaged & muted, and haven’t noticed a huge difference, so you should be OK without this.

The master is unfreezable (as master channels always are), and on this master channel there is a Pro Q-2 & Pro-L doing some basic mastering stuff. The EQ is just brigtening & coloring different elements of the spectrum mainly & the Pro-L is boosting the gain by about 15dB. You could try & re-create this with Live’s native EQ Eight & Limiter, or you could just turn your speakers up & hear the raw, un-mastered, dynamic version (which I personally prefer).

ill-esha – Lighthouse (Mr. Bill Remix) (Ableton Live Template)

Here’s the project file for a remix I did for ill-esha in 2014.

I believe I did this remix right after I finished writing IRL (in case you were wondering where in my production journey I was around that time).

I put any sidechained tracks with third party plug-ins into their own group so that I could freeze the tracks themselves but still use the sidechain compression on the group. So if you’re looking through this project and you find yourself thinking “why is this single track in a group all by itself?” that is why.

Beat The Clock (Ableton Contest Submission) By Mr. Bill

*Notes*

The drums were done (unusually) in a drum-rack this time, so the coloring is a little different there, apart from that everything else is as usual with my project files 🙂

There are no 3rd-party plug-ins used in this session

Most of my bass was generated with Zebra 2, Massive and Operator

Most FX things were generated with native Ableton audio effects rendered from other material then processed again (eg. reversed, warped, chopped up, re-effected etcetera)

The strings in the middle section were generated using Kontakt 5 – Session Strings Pro, and the piano from Alicia’s Keys

This track was my entry for a remix contest Ableton held in May, 2012

This tune is comprised of all original sound design all the way down to the drums.

In fact, this tune could even serve as a demo track for my sample packs.

Originally released on Powered by Inspected – Vol. 2

*Notes*

I was unable to recreate the mastering using ableton devices so I just left all those plug-ins in a rack and turned it off, if you dont have them you’ll just have to hear the track unmastered.

I left all of the original Celesta/Kalimba MIDI at the bottom of the session, it’s all frozen and muted but I left it there incase you have Kontakt and wanted to mess with any of it or do a remix 🙂

Mr. Bill Heisenbogan (Ableton Live Template)

Mr. Bill Heisenbogan (Ableton Live Template)

Rich, bluesy flavours set the space in Heisenbogan and are quickly infiltrated by tight percussion and hyper-specific bass articulations. With dense layers of muted guitars and a wild west twang echoing over a powerful and polished glitch hop beat. Soft chords take you into a lounge-y breakdown and allow the track to simmer into a mellow flow.

*Notes*

There’s a Uhbik-A on the “Short Verb” return channel (A) which I couldn’t freeze, as return tracks aren’t freezable, however, I would suggest getting the Uhbik plug-ins if you can, because, they’re AWESOME, but if you can’t, then you could just put any “small room” type of reverb here, and it’d likely sound somewhat in the range of what I have happening with Uhbik-A.

I have FabFilter – Pro Q-2 & Pro-L on the master for some mastering related purposes. You could use any EQ/Limiter combo though really, these are just my preferred 🙂

This session is mostly Ableton Native actually. It’s a good example of what Ableton is capable of without too much third party soft synth action 🙂

Trill Clinton ft. Tha Fruitbat Ableton Project File From Mr. Bill

Mr. Bill & Tha Fruitbat – Trill Clinton (Pre Stem Session)

*Notes*

Channel’s 70,71 & 72 (in the “Serum Synths” group) are de-activated, but frozen because they were only used as the source signals for the final iterations of the sounds in those sections (just incase you wanted to check out how we made the sounds in the synths before editing them in audio).

Channel 26 – “Growl Synth” is an AU of Serum (which is unusual for one of my projects), but it’s frozen, so don’t worry it should work fine.

There’s a FabFilter Pro-L on the master channel doing some light limiting. Unfortunately, Ableton doesn’t let you freeze the master channel, so if you don’t have Pro-L, you should just remove it and add Live’s native limiter (if you want some extra volume of course).

*Plug-ins Used (Frozen)*

· Sonic Academy – Kick

*Notes*

The only 3rd party plug-ins used in this project are FabFilter’sPro-Q 2 & Pro-L on the master – which is of course, unfreezeable, so if you don’t have those, don’t worry too much! 😀 You’re basically just missing a bit of extra volume.

Mr. Bill SBS Quality (Ableton Live Template)

Mr. Bill SBS Quality (Ableton Live Template)

SBS Quality immediately captures the attention with tightening percussive elements and raw textures stretched over warm and bendy chords. Quickly dropping into dense flashes of serialised funk that are locked together by an incredibly crisp beat. Unfolding in a sweet lullaby of a breakdown, the second half culminates in a fury of bubbles, funk and percussive genius before gently settling to rest.

*Notes*

Everything should run as normal apart from the FabFilter – Pro-L & Pro-Q 2 I have on the master (which is unfreezable). However, you should be able to use any EQ/Limiter combination, these are just my
preferred 🙂

Mr. Bill Piss Rash Blues (Ableton Live Template)

In Piss Rash Blues, an organic drum kit along with a precision cut Saxophone flare lock into an immediately entrancing groove with a raw organic soundscape that seems clearer by the moment. Synthetic pads and melodic snippets balance the spectrum solidifying this song into another deep and loungey number.

*Notes*

There were a few plug-ins that were unfreezable due to the nature of where they were (on return tracks & the master), and they are u-he – Uhbik, FabFilter – Pro-Q 2 & FabFilter – Pro-L. These are all interchangeable with any reverb, EQ & limiter plug-ins honestly, these were just my preference at the time.

Mr. Bill 2CT7 ft. Qebrus Ableton Live Template by Mr. Bill

Mr. Bill & Qebrus û 2CT7 (Pre-Stem Session)

I couldn’t freeze ôChannel 11ö û ôDrum Machinesö because the routing was kinda complex, so I rendered an audio file out named ôDrum Machine Stuff.wavö that just sits underneath that channel & muted the original channel, so the project will play back fine û but unless you have Izotope Alloy 2 & FabFilter Pro-L, that original
channel won’t play back quite as expected if you choose to unmute that one & re-mute the new channel I put underneat it titled ôDrum Machine (Rendered)ö.

I couldn’t freeze an instance of Izotope û Trash 2 on the Bass Group (Channel 13) û so again, I rendered it & put a version that sounds correct in the group (but I have this version muted) û Feel free to mute Channel’s 14-17 & turn Channel 18 ôBass Group Renderedö on if you want to hear this correctly. Note: It’s rendered with sidechain
compression on it û so the ouput of Channel 18 is not going to the group, but straight to the master instead. Also note: I set up the hot-key ôqö to just switch between monitoring the group or the rendered version (try it out û pretty nifty û take ôqö for a spin!).

There’s an instance of FabFilter Pro-Q 2 on the FX Group (Channel 29) that I couldn’t freeze (because, you cannot freeze groups) û however, it’s just cutting low frequencies for mix purposes. You could easily
trade it out for EQ Eight û and infact, I just put an EQ Eight on the group to replicate what it’s doing. You can turn that on if you don’t have Pro-Q 2.

Same as the FX Group, there’s an instance of Pro-Q 2 on the Vocals Group (Channel 46) that I couldn’t freeze (due to being on a group again) û so I’ve put an instance of EQ Eight effectively doing the same thing that you can turn on if you don’t have Pro-Q 2.

I couldn’t freeze ôReturn Aö û ôLong Verbö which has instances of Valhalla Room & Pro-Q 2 on it, so instead, I rendered a version out & saved it as an audio file on ôChannel 46ö in the FX Group (that seemed like a fitting place for it to go). So if you don’t have those two plug-ins, feel free to mut Return A & turn on Channel 46.

Plug-ins Used (Frozen)

· Izotope û Alloy 2
· FabFilter û Pro-Q 2
· FabFilter û Pro-L
· Izotope û Trash 2
· Native Instruments û Kontakt 5
· Native Instruments û Massive
· Cakewalk û Z3TA+ 2
· Xfer Records û Serum
· FabFilter û Saturn
· Applied Acoustics Systems û Lounge Lizard Session
· u-he û Uhbik
· u-he û Zebra 2
· Valhalla DSP û Valhalla Room

Mr. Bill & Qebrus û 2CT7 (Post Stem Session)

I couldn’t freeze ôReturn Aö (as return channels aren’t freezable) which has Valhalla Room & Pro-Q 2 on it, so instead I rendered a copy into ôChannel 15ö û so if you don’t have these 2 plug-ins, feel free to turn ôReturn Aö off, and turn ôChannel 15ö on, and you should be back in business.

I also couldn’t freeze the master channel, as it’s also not able to be frozen (stoopid Ableton rulez) û so, there’s an instance of both Pro-L & Pro-Q 2 on there, and they’re taking care of the mastering however, it’s just some simple EQ’ing & limiting to make it sound nice & loud & be a little more balanced.

Plug-ins Used (Frozen)

· FabFilter û Pro-Q 2
· u-he û Zebra 2
· Valhalla DSP û Valhalla Room
· FabFilter û Pro-L

Mr. Bill Cascaded Strings (Ableton Live Template)

Mr. Bill Cascaded Strings (Ableton Live Template)

Mr. Bill Cascaded Strings (Ableton Live Template)

This tune was made up completely of sounds I made using my acoustic guitar (hence the name – cascaded strings).

This is a good example of how processing is king, if you can turn acoustic guitar noises into this, then you can turn anything into anything really ????

*Notes*

Everything in this tune was made from recordings of my guitar,
processed and arranged in different ways.

I couldn’t freeze the return channel so I bounced out a wav of it
and left it at the bottom of the session, if you have valhalla you
can just mute that channel and use the return.

I wasn’t able to recreate the mastering with ableton devices so I
left all the third party plug-ins that were on the master in a
rack but turned off, so if you have ’em you can turn them on and
hear the master, but if not I left a utility there with the gain
turned up so you can still hear the tune at a decent level.

Crowd Sourced Data Ableton Live Template by Mr. Bill

*Notes*

I could not freeze the “Dirty Drums” group (Group 17 – groups
aren’t freezeable uinfortunately), which means the FabFilter Pro-Q
2 on there won’t run if you don’t own it, but all it’s doing it
cutting the low frequencies @ 20hz on all things that are mono &
150hz on all things stereo (in m/s mode)

I could not freeze Return Channel B, unfortunately, return channels
aren’t freezeable, it has a u-he – Uhbik A (ambience processor on
it), all that’s being sent there is Channel 63 “Vox Render”, and
it’s literally just adding the tiniest bit of high-frequency, air
to the vocal track (you really won’t be missing much it if you
don’t have it)

The plug-ins on the master obviously cannot be frozen, all they’re
doing is adding a bit of high-frequencies, low-frequencies, and
boosting the volume.

Mr. Bill & ill.Gates – Harmonica Lewinsky (Post Stem Session)

*Notes*

I couldn’t freeze Channel 45 which is the Bass group, so unfortunately
if you don’t own Izotope – Trash 2 – the bass will be missing a tiny
bit of grit, but it’s mostly just to give the subs some overtones and
harmonics so they pop a bit more on smaller sound-systems. If you
don’ thave it, don’t stress, it still sounds like a pretty accurate
representation of the original tune without it 🙂

I couldn’t freeze Return channel B, which has Guitar Rig 5 on it,
again, if you don’t own it, don’t stress, it’s just adding some grit
to some things, it’s definitely not THAT important to the track.
