Track Production in Maschine MK3 TUTORIAL

Track Production in Maschine MK3 PROPER TUTORIAL

Now in version 2.13, Native Instruments Maschine has seen improvements that have taken it from the humblest beginnings when it comes to song arrangement, to a flexible and fully-featured timeline. Following on from the Complete Guide to Maschine MK3, which covered all of the basics of working with the software/hardware combo, Producertech Senior Tutor Rob Jones now returns to use the latest version to produce a Future Funk track from scratch.

Rob begins the course by building up the beats, which are created using a combination of step and 16-velocity modes, editing events and processing sounds with insert and send effects entirely from the hardware. He then works his way through all of the melodies, starting with the main chords progression, played with a Vintage Organs preset, and then adding pads, leads, arps and bass.

Percussion and Vocal samples are then sourced from Loopcloud to show how easily the free app integrates with Maschine, and how sounds can be imported and worked into patterns using Maschine’s Audio device. All parts are then woven together into an arrangement, starting by creating scenes in ideas mode, before moving into song mode to lay them out into sections along the timeline.

Rob also shows how patterns can be converted into clips, the most recent big addition to Maschine, making arranging even more flexible and intuitive. The course finishes up with a look at the next steps, whether that’s exporting audio to obtain a completed track or stems, or routing sounds into the DAW.

Course Breakdown

  • Module 1 – Drums
Rob puts together the beats in Group A, creating a kit from the ground up. Drums are sequenced in step and 16-velocity modes, and events are edited to change timing and volume. Once the main pattern is made, send and insert effects are applied, as well as automation to add interest to the groove.
    Lesson 1 – Laying down the Kick & Snare – 12.44
    Lesson 2 – Adding Hats – 12.22
    Lesson 3 – Layering a Clap – 8.03
    Lesson 4 – Applying Send Effects – 14.46
    Lesson 5 – Group Compression & EQ – 10.52
  • Module 2 – Building up Melodies
The main melodic sounds are composed, starting with the organ part, which forms the basis for the whole track. Additional layers are then added, transposing and inverting chords to give sounds their own space in the mix. Events are recorded in chords mode with auto-quantise and then edited and humanised so they fit nicely into the break.
    Lesson 1 – Main Chords Progression & Riff – 15.00
    Lesson 2 – Inverted Choir Layer – 11.33
    Lesson 3 – Delayed & Filtered ‘Wah’ Chords – 13.57
    Lesson 4 – Adding an Arp Synth – 9.14
  • Module 3 – Melodies Part 2
The remaining melodic sounds are built up, starting with the bass, then moving onto leads and strings. Keyboard mode is used to play in all sounds, with pads locked to the relevant scale.
    Lesson 1 – Creating a Bassline – 19.22
    Lesson 2 – Composing a Lead – 13.43
    Lesson 3 – Adding Strings – 8.51
  • Module 4 – Adding Loops
Rob shows how to find matching percussion loops in the Maschine browser and also using the 3rd party app Loopcloud. Samples are then imported into Maschine and sequenced. A vocal sample is also dragged in and then sliced up onto a few pads so the vocal can be played with different soundslots.
    Lesson 1 – Finding Percussion Loops in Maschine & Loopcloud – 17.36
    Lesson 2 – Importing & Chopping up a Vocal – 12.41
  • Module 5 – Arranging the Track
Using the patterns constructed so far on the course, Rob shows how to build up scenes, which then form the basic building blocks of sections along the timeline. Once the main structure is laid out, patterns are converted into clips so they can be edited freely, and new clips are added for various sounds. Finally, parts are automated and tweaks made to the bass and lead, before FX are added to help with transitions and overall texture.
Lesson 1 – Creating Scenes in Ideas Mode – 17.41
    Lesson 2 – Adding Scenes & Clips in Song Mode – 10.08
Lesson 3 – Organ Automation and Intro Sub Bass – 10.35
    Lesson 4 – Arp Pattern & Song Automation – 13.33
    Lesson 5 – Bass Variation & Changing the Lead Sound – 8.43
    Lesson 6 – Adding FX – 10.43
  • Module 6 – Next Steps
Rob shows some different processes for what to do once the arrangement is complete, be it exporting the final track or stems, or routing sounds into the DAW for additional processing.
    Lesson 1 – Exporting Audio – 13.32
Lesson 2 – Importing Stems and Routing Audio into the DAW – 9.48

Samples From Mars Modular Drum Loops From Mars MULTIFORMAT

Spicy Modular Drum Loops From the Depths of the Eurorack World
Modular Drum Loops is a collection of 225 Eurorack drum loops, sequenced with our massive modular (10 years in the making), and lovingly processed through our favorite outboard gear. More than just blips and boops, these are club-ready rhythms centered around 120 BPM, ranging from clean and tame to strange and deranged. With a wide array of analog, digital and FM textures, impossible drumscapes, modulated FX sequences and syncopated polyrhythms, these loops are an immediate way to inject the off-kilter funk of the modular drum world into your next creation (without emptying your bank account).

A Vast Sonic Range at Your Fingertips
One of the most appealing aspects of a modular rig is its diversity in sound. Because we’re dealing with so many different forms of synthesis, brands, electronics and devices simultaneously, the tones we get cover a much wider range than say, sampling a drum machine. And yet they are still cohesive and work perfectly together:

The Modules
Each module has a life of its own, which can be flipped on its head in an infinite amount of ways depending on where it is in the signal chain, and how it’s connected to another module. We chose a wide variety of analog, digital, and hybrid sources (both traditional and drum-based), and then processed those with various filters, drives, and FX. All of this, including filter and FX parameters, was then sequenced to create the loops.

Synthesizing the Drum Sounds
A modular rig is deeply complicated and potentially paralyzing for those just starting out – and, like most things, it’s not the size that matters, it’s what you do with it! Particularly when synthesizing drum sounds from non-drum sources, it’s important to have a few tricks up your sleeve.

For instance, we had no tom module. So, we ran two frequency modulated waveforms into a low-pass gate and modulated it with a tight envelope, to create Buchla-style bongos and toms:

Adding Movement and Modulation
Sampling one shots is like taking a single snapshot in time, whereas loops are a chance for FX and modulation to really shine. And as opposed to a classic drum machine, a modular system like ours will have no shortage of modulation options (LFOs, envelopes and highly advanced sequencers) to breath life, depth, and unexpectedness into an otherwise stagnant drum loop. This can be achieved by patching oddly timed LFOs into filter or VCA inputs, or by using a sequencer to modulate bit depth, distortio, or reverb size. You can also go old-skool and just use your hands.

It can make a world of difference, especially on hats, cymbals and tops:

Processing the Results
One of the only things the Eurorack format can’t do is process these loops with Class A studio weapons like an API console, parallel compression and EQ. Luckily, we are no strangers to these tools, and jumped at the chance to breath a little more life and “doneness” into these drum sequences.

So we ran the drums through our API console with a little EQ, and into an Overstayer Saturator, an Overstayer Modular Channel, and a touch of API 2500 compression.

This toughened up the loops, and added some sustain and pump that, in my experience, is unachievable with plugins. This processing definitely took the loops over the top, and made them record-ready straight out of the box.

Putting it all Together
Putting this pack together was a blast, and above all else, the loops themselves are FUN. With full beats, tops, stripped down patterns and individual drum grooves, this is an immediate way to inject that big modular drum energy into your productions.

While loops may be more limiting than one-shots, they sound more authentic. It’s quicker and easier to drag a modular drum loop into your track than to try to program one from scratch with one-hits. That said, we’ve created meticulous REX files, so you can easily export one-hits (MPC Programs, anybody?) to your hearts delight.

…And even though these loops are techno-leaning, they can be used in ANY genre – in fact, that’s where they might shine the most.

Toplining 101: Melody & Lyrics in Songwriting TUTORIAL

As a class project you’ll be working on your own song topline!

Each lesson will focus on a new step in the process, so that by the end of the class you have a completed, fully formed topline! I’ll show you how to get started and approach this project from the perspective that’s right for you and your experience, and then take you through the process of crafting your topline, one manageable step at a time.

At the end when you have your idea you can then share this with me and your fellow class mates to get feedback and advice on the next steps to take with your idea.

If you use a music software program such as Logic, Pro Tools or GarageBand, you can use this to record and share your topline. If you have no idea what those programs are you can absolutely just use the voice notes app that you’ll find on most smart phones, or video yourself or someone else singing your song. You can upload your file as an MP3 or M4A (voice note) audio recording, or as a video. You can also share links to your work via SoundCloud and YouTube.

Remember this class is NOT about recording perfect quality song demos, using music technology or great singing voices – our focus is on crafting memorable, meaningful melodies and lyrics, whatever stage you’re at in your musical and songwriting journey.

If you need any guidance along the way please reach out and I’ll be there to help and offer feedback!

I’m so excited to hear your work!

The Sound of the Unconscious (The International Psychoanalytical Association Psychoanalytic Ideas & Applications Series) PDF

The Sound of the Unconscious (The International Psychoanalytical Association Psychoanalytic Ideas & Applications Series)

In this book, Ludovica Grassi explores the importance of music in psychoanalysis, arguing that music is a basic working tool for psyche, as words are composed of sound, rhythm and intonation more than lexical meaning.

Starting from ethnomusicological, evolutionary, neurodevelopmental, psychological and psychoanalytical perspectives, the book explores music’s symbolic status, structure and way of operating compared to unconscious psychic functioning. Extraordinary similarities are revealed, especially in mechanisms such as repetition, imitation, variation (transformation), intimacy and the work of mourning, of the negative and of nostalgia. Moreover, silence and absence are essential components of music as well as of psychic and symbolic functioning. Time and temporality are specifically investigated in the book as key elements both in music and in symbolization and subjectivation processes. The role of the word’s phonic kernel and of the voice as fundamental links to emotions, the body, the sexual and the infantile has promising implications for psychoanalytic work. All these elements find an articulation in the natural as well as complex activity of listening, which conveys a tri-dimensional and polyphonic dimension of the world, so important both in music and in psychoanalysis.

Illuminating the link between music and analysis in new and contemporary ways, The Sound of the Unconscious explores the resulting advances in theory and clinical practice and will be of great interest to practicing and training psychoanalysts and psychotherapists.

Routledge International Handbook of Music Psychology in Education & the Community PDF

Routledge International Handbook of Music Psychology in Education & the Community PDF

This handbook provides an evidence-based account of psychological perspectives on issues in music education and music in the community through the life course, exploring our understanding of music learning and participation across contexts.

The contributors draw on multidisciplinary research from different cultures and contexts in order to set out the implications of music psychology for music education and music in the community. Highlighting the intersecting issues across education and community contexts, the book proposes new theories as well as offering important refinements to existing conceptual models. Split into six parts, it considers the role of music in society as well as for groups and individuals, and explores topics such as processing and responding to music; pedagogical and musical practices that support or pose challenges to the emotional, cognitive, social or physical wellbeing of learners and participants in a range of contexts; and ‘music in identity’ or ‘identity in music’. With the final part on future directions and the implications for professional practice in music education and music in the community, the book concludes by exploring how the two sectors might work more closely together within a post-COVID-19 world.

Based on cutting-edge research from an international team, this is essential reading for anyone interested in music psychology, education and community, and it will be particularly helpful for undergraduate and graduate students in music psychology, music education and community music.
