A virtual analog effect inspired by classic bucket-brigade delays (BBD), but extended with modern features. We called our new baby “Colour Copy” because it can deliver the kind of colouration people still love in classic BBD units, but with a wider variety of colours. Colour Copy started life as the little delay unit called “Lyrebird” we built into Repro-1, but the sound was too good not to be developed further and become an FX plug-in.
Colour Copy in the spotlight…
BBD-style analog delay, for the smoothest possible pitch effects
unique colour morphing, with saturation for non-linear effects such as distortion / resonance
1ms to 1s or host-synched time base, scaled via rate control from 25% to 400%
dynamic ducking via envelope follower
LFO (with dynamic frequency and depth) can modulate rate, tap position or amplitude.
MIDI note tracking and Freeze button (infinite loop) for wildest experimental effects
powerful preset browser with tag and/or text search functions
independent input and feedback routing options allow all possible stereo or mono combinations
100 factory presets, NKS-compatible
UI instantly resizable from 70% to 200%
custom remote control via MIDI CC, 14-bit resolution option
In most digital delays the delay time alters the size of the buffer. If you quickly modulate or sweep the delay time on a typical digital unit, unmusical glitches propagate through the feedback as the buffer is shortened or lengthened. Like a real BBD, Colour Copy changes the internal samplerate instead (i.e. how fast the “buckets” pass on their content), and this is why Colour Copy is smooth with a capital SMOO!
Features
Colours
During development we soon realized that we could capture the essence of the entire range of classic bucket brigade delays – from the low-range rumbling, slowly evolving delays to the highly resonant, screaming characters. A single knob lets you continuously blend between the five finely-tuned “colour” macros. The differences may be subtle, but each one is rich in detail. In addition to obvious differences in frequency bandwidth, each comes with its own noise and dynamic characteristics, frequency loss over time, and several other qualities. The Saturation knob controls how prominent or subtle those characteristics should be, in case you want to dial back the colouration to better fit in the mix. Finally, a Brightness knob lets you adjust the bandwidth.
Flexibility
Colour Copy is capable of a huge variety of different delay-based effects. With delay times ranging from under a millisecond to several seconds, you can create anything from comb-filter and flange/chorus effects to regular ping-pong delays and longer “looper” effects. The routing options let you mix or swap the input and feedback signals independently or even invert the feedback phase for various phase cancellation effects when delay times are set very short. Additionally, unlike hardware BBD units, Colour Copy’s left and right output “taps” can be placed anywhere along the delay lines. This feature lets you move echos independently “forward in time” for e.g. ping-pong or “rushing” delays as well as various stereo chorus or flanger effects. You never knew you’d want three different ways to create a ping-pong effect!
Animation
Colour Copy comes with a stereo LFO that can be used to modulate either the delay rate, the tap positions or the delay amplitude. With a range of 0.05Hz to 20Hz (as times: 20s to 50ms) the LFO can create chorus, vibrato and tremolo effects. Crank up the modulation depth for deep pitch-shifting. An envelope follow signal derived from the input signal can be used to modulate the LFO frequency and depth, adding realtime dynamics to the effects.
Colour Copy comes with the obligatory ducking compressor, but with a unique twist: You can select whether to duck the entire delay output or just the feedback signal. This latter option leaves the very first delay unaffected, preserving the overall stereo “space” while preventing the sonic mayhem that high regeneration often causes.
Performance Control
Some people like to perform on their BBD hardware, pitching the regeneration up and down by twisting the rate knob. We took Colour Copy a step further in this direction by adding a pair of creative features: Firstly, a freeze button that loops the contents of the delay buffer for as long as you like. Secondly, MIDI key control so that you can play Colour Copy like a mono synth – each octave up doubles the delay rate.

Repro dives into the past for analogue inspiration, meticulously modelling two famous synthesizers. Every detail of the original was captured using component-level modelling technology to create the most authentic model possible. All the subtle characteristics and quirks found in the originals are present in Repro. One product, one installer, two synths.
Repro-1 in the spotlight…
Powerful analogue sound using component-level modelling
2 multi-wave oscillators: saw/pulse and saw / triangle / pulse
Repro-1 is a fierce monosynth: The classic design gives you immediate access to all the raw power: Two oscillators, self-oscillating 4-pole lowpass filter, arpeggiator, step sequencer, the unique modulation section, and five stomp-box effects which can be arranged in any order. Hard working, raw sounding and immediately playable, it’s a simple and intuitive synthesizer which belies a deep feature set capable of a wide range of sounds.
Basics and history
The plug-in is a component-level model of perhaps the most powerful-sounding monophonic keyboard ever built. In the early 1980s, polyphonic synthesizers were almost within reach of the average musician. To be commercially viable, any new monophonic instrument had to be cheap but very capable. Fat drones, cutting leads, funky basses, quirky sci-fi sound effects – this synthesizer delivered on all counts.
The circuit design made good use of standard Curtis chips and the little onboard sequencer was more than just a welcome extra. Despite its molded plastic panel and the limitations of monophony, it sold surprisingly well and is generally recognized as an iconic piece of synthesizer history.
Our plug-in version includes all the lovable quirks of this classic synth, but with a much more capable sequencer, lots of presets, several under-the-hood tweaks, more modulation options, and as a plus: a great collection of cute stomp-box effects.
Features
Tweaks panel
Apart from being unashamed eye-candy, the Tweaks page is there to let you change the fundamental behaviour of individual modules. There are 5 user-adjustable jumpers (mini circuit connectors) and 5 module tweak selectors. While on this page, all the main controls of the synthesizer are still accessible.
Beside the option to modify the synth’s fundamental characteristics through jumpers and selectors, the panel also includes access to the Microtuning section with many included presets.
Sequencer
The sequencer in the original hardware may have been a stroke of genius. Repro-1’s version lets you step-record two patterns of up to 32 notes each, which are also saved with the preset and support copy/paste of pattern’s presets between different instances of the plug-in.
Other than having more steps than the original, the integrated sequencer supports per-step velocity, a rest button to add pauses, the ability to record your own sequences through a MIDI controller, and other improvements.
Stomp-boxes
Repro-1 ships with a set of 5 high quality effects in the shape of stomp-boxes. From subtle to extreme adjustments, this section expands the analogue synthesizer’s capabilities beyond expectations.
The effects section includes Jaws (wavefolder), Lyrebird (a flexible delay, which inspired the creation of Colour Copy), RESQ (semi-parametric EQ or resonator), Drench (a lush plate reverb), and Sonic Conditioner (a stereo saturator and transient designer – to add the right amount of gelatine to your patches). All effects are rearrangeable through drag and drop in the FX Chain section.

Once reserved for major studios, digital recording has become widespread. It offers pristine sound and comfortable editing at a fraction of the cost of multitrack tape. Despite all the advantages, however, digital audio can easily sound too clean and impersonal. So musicians, producers and audio engineers have turned to traditional analogue tools to bring some life back into overly clinical recordings. A world of non-linear behaviours, distortion, saturation and much more arises during tape recording and playback. Bringing these coveted characteristics of magnetic tape into the digital realm, in unprecedented quality—this is what Satin is all about.
Features
The sound
That tape sound depends on interaction between the various parts of a tape machine. Each contributes in one way or another—enhancing, reducing, combining—to generate the final sound.
Satin models individual components and lets them interact in the same way. For maximum flexibility in sound shaping, Satin is a toolkit of alternative parts, not an emulation of a single machine. Build your own custom tape unit. The perfect final sheen for your mixdown, or “glue” multiple drum tracks together, decode old NR-encoded cassette tape, or misuse Satin for extreme effects.
Delay and flange
After developing the components for a tape machine toolkit, our minds turned other popular tape-based machines. Delay and flange immediately jumped to mind.
In service
Imagine opening up a tape machine, peeking “under the hood” and tinkering with the parts. That is what service technicians used to do, and it is what the Service Panel in Satin is for. It gives you detailed control over some of the more esoteric and characterful elements.
In the Tape section are perhaps the more readily identifiable attributes of tape recording: hiss, asperity, wow & flutter, crosstalk and bias. Dial in a little of each for a retro vibe or “glue”. Dial in the extreme settings and you can end up with the sound of poor quality tape left in someone’s basement far too long.
The Repro Head(s) parameters control the physical attributes of the tape heads. With Gap Width and Bump you can cut or boost certain frequencies and introduce resonances and fluctuations. Azimuth pushes the audio off-centre for interesting spatial effects, mimicking a skewed tape head.
Finally the Circuit section lets you change the inner EQ circuitry. Included are various industry standard EQ curves, should you want to mimic specific machines. But Satin goes a step further by allowing independent selection of the recording and reproduction EQ curves. Which you can abuse for weird processing effects, or to correct EQ errors in old recordings (see below).
Decoding
Selectable Compander and Circuit settings make Satin useful as a format converter.
If you have a tape recording with an unsuitable EQ, using Circuit’s independent RecEQ and ReproEQ selectors you can set a new target EQ curve and make changes. Similarly, Compander can handle audio recorded with specific noise reduction (NR) encodings. Just run it through Satin with Decoder set to match the known NR encoding type.
