Splice Originals producer Erick Bardales, who created the Sensaciones and La Formula packs, is serving up Caribbean vibes, honing in on his Honduran Caribbean roots. Growing up on the coast of Puerto Cortes, Honduras, Panamanian reggae and dancehall music resonated from every corner. It was hard not to be influenced by popular artists like El Rookie, El General, Danger Man, and Kafu Banton.
For this pack, he drew inspiration from his youth in Honduras and added a New Orleans twist, blending deep memories with current experiences. The result is a shimmering, tropical collection of bongos, steelpan, synths, guitars, ukele, FX, and more that have tastes of pop, reggae, dancehall, R&B, and electronica.
Sean Hutchinson has been a touring and recording member of the band Bleachers since 2014 and an active force on the New York City music scene since 2007. For this release, he recorded a bunch of drum breaks in his Brooklyn studio influenced by his jazz background, experience in pop and indie rock acts, and drummers he admires. The crew then put the sounds through an Ampex 440-B Tape Machine for a proper crunch at 7.5 inches per second. The result is banging drums dripping in saturation, grit, and unique lo-fi character.
When performing this pack, Sean fused inspiration from jazz icons like Brian Blade, Elvin Jones, and Art Blakey along with cross-genre contemporary players such as Matt Chamberlain, Jim Keltner, and Aaron Sterling.
The crew teamed up with Jason Matthews on keys and Justin Andres on guitar to create a foundation of songs primed to be chopped, twisted, and screwed. Matthews and Andres worked remotely off of each other’s ideas, swapping melodies and riffs back and forth until they had complete songs.
We then resampled and reworked their files, just as if we had found them in the dollar vinyl bin. The result is a mix of dark funk, lo-fi hip hop, and cinematic soul thrown in the blender. In addition to the keys and guitars, you’ll find banging hip hop drums to make this a full-on toolkit for making low-key bangers.
Future Soul Vol.1 with Brandyn Burnette WAV PRESETS
Musician Brandyn Burnette who performs as EMAN8 and collaborated on the Devine Vocal Emanations release joined us at our Studios NYC once again. For this pack, he dove into the sounds of future soul while tapping his Jamaican roots for unique inspiration. With one foot in the past and the other in the future, Brandyn brought his silky falsetto and tenor, which lend themselves to pop and R&B perfection. He came up with riffs, melodies, hooks, and adlibs on the spot that have instantaneous hit-making quality and genre-bending potential.
Spring has sprung in the Western Hemisphere and we’re back outside capturing nature’s unfoldings as the temperatures rise once again. The Splice Originals team captured an extensive set of percussive nature sounds made with sticks and stones we found along a trail in rural Tennessee. Then we mined the archives for previously unheard field recordings from the forests and seasides of Northern California.
To complement these sounds, we crafted a set of Astra presets, Beatmaker patches, and melodic loops using electric guitar, a Wurlitzer, and a Rhodes to inspire all of your late spring musings and sonic adventures. The result is a collection of spring field recordings mixed with modern sound design to offer you a truly unique bouquet of samples for your next production.
Beatmaker is a sequencer plugin that works with any DAW and allows you to create beats without the need for complex drum programming. Astra is Splice’s new, versatile software synthesizer and sound design tool that enables you to come up with a wide range of unique tones as quickly and intuitively as possible.
For this release, music producer Ray Luminais (Lil Wayne, Boosie, Ambre, Raw D.I, T Stead, Viacom, Mibe) zooms in on deep south trap music with a New Orleans twist. Influenced by the likes of Mannie Fresh, Zaytoven, 808 Mafia, and KLC, Ray combined his vocals with keys, analog, and digital synths to offer up a brooding, emotive collection of trap samples with that mystic NOLA magic.
This pack was recorded in Dakar at Laboutique Studios, produced by Pape Armand Boye. Working with musicians from the Casamance region – a tiny, isolated sliver of land below Gambia – this pack is a deep dive into the Diola ethnic music of the region’s people.
The Diola are famous for the akonting, a folk lute instrument. Interaction between voice and ekonting is a central feature of ekonting music, with the melody of the ekonting said to “follow” the vocal melody. Both music and lyrics are typically based on relatively short strophes, often consisting of a repeated four-measure phrase or couplet.
Like most West African regions, music is very important in the daily lives of Diola people. Casamance has seen immense conflict and holds a distinct identity apart from the rest of Senegal. As a result, their lyrics tend to be about pain and suffering. Yet, their music is deeply participatory, inherently social, and associated with positive valences of tradition and heritage, and is often used at festivals, ceremonies, casual gatherings, and beyond.
In this pack, we explored other West African instruments including percussion and strings, in addition to the akonting, along with a modern Senegalese take.
This pack was produced by Pape Armand Boye at Laboutique Studios in Dakar. This is a deep dive into the region of Fuuta in Senegal and represents the Pulaar ethnic group. Pape only worked with musicians from the Fuuta region to recreate sounds that represent their culture, heritage, and region.
The Fula have a rich musical culture and play a variety of traditional instruments including drums, hoddu (a plucked skin-covered lute similar to a banjo), and riti or riiti (a one-string bowed instrument similar to a violin), in addition to vocal music. Zaghareet or ululation is a popular form of vocal music formed by rapidly moving the tongue sideways and making a sharp, high sound.
This release is part two of a two-part series (following West African Meditations) featuring folk instrumentation and free-flowing musical passages commonly used in West African traditions. Recorded and produced at La Boutique Studios Dakar by Pape Armand Boye, this collection provides further insights into the sonic experience of West African spirituality, where music is the centerpiece of celebrations and rituals. In this pack, you’ll find West African rhythms, vocals, and instruments such as the balafon, ngoni, and kora. Plus, synths, guitars, drums, and percussion.
