Bridging the organic and digital worlds in the best tradition of previous Riot Audio instruments, PHONETIC is an innovative vocal morphing engine for Native Instrument’s Kontakt 6. It draws on a wide selection of single and dual phonemes (ah, eh, ba, la, vv etc) as a basis for musical sound design. Although technically a sample library, the architecture and resulting sounds are more reminiscent of a synth.
PHONETIC’s pulses, pads, keys and other sounds are not limited to the original performers’ ranges and are therefore playable across the entire keyboard range. Be prepared to be mesmerised by a smorgasbord of looping, whirling and gradually unfolding velvety soundscapes.
PHONETIC is a syllable-based vocal morphing engine for Native Instrument’s Kontakt 6. It is loaded with 44 female and male vowel/consonant performances recorded across a broad range of pitches, arranged in three layers: Body, Loops and Air.
The over 3000 total possible sound combinations can be sculpted into evolving pads, pulses, pad/pulse combinations, and also keys and riser sounds with the Shape, Morphing and Movement controls in the user interface.
PHONETIC contains 125 presets, ranging from minimalism-inspired looping female single syllables, via gently evolving formant-filtered pad sounds, to gritty distorted riser sounds.
Home Screen
The Home Screen contains top-level controls for the layers, including:
Source selection
On/off switches for each layer
Layer Volume
Individual Level Meters for each layer
The Home Screen also contains the master controls, with selectors for dynamics:
The layer screen contains in-depth controls for the layers (envelopes), specific controls for each layer type, morphing and movement tabs, and a vibrato tab for each of the layers individually.
Layer Screen – Sound Elements
PHONETIC’s Engine comprises three layer types – Body, Loops and Air. Each contains a distinct set of sounds (phonemes), with unique processing variables. All sounds were recorded in a female (f) and male version (m).
BODY
This layer contains sustained open vowel sounds such as “Ah”, “Oh”, “Eh”, “Ooh”, “A-E-I-O-U” and hums. The unique layer controls adjust sample start.
LOOPS
This layer contains looped consonant/vowel combinations (syllables) sounds such as “Na”, “Bo”, “Mi”, “Lu” and “Mo”. The unique layer control adjusts tempo-synced looping speed.
AIR
This layer contains sustained sibilant consonant sounds such as “ff”, “sh”, “vv” and others. The unique layer controls allow for controlling weight (amount of low-end body).
Layer Screen – Morphing
The Morphing Tab is designed to create smooth, gradually evolving textures. It contains the following possible morphing parameters:Low Pass Filter, Band Pass Filter, Formant Filter, Distortion. Morphing Amount and Time can be individually adjusted, as can the Direction of the effect.
Layer Screen – Movement
The movement tab contains three LFO types (sine, square and triangle) to control Low Pass and High Pass Filters. This effect is tempo-synced and creates very effective pulses, tremolo effects and other tempo-based textures. As in the morphing tab, the direction of the filters opening/closing can be reversed.
Effects Screen
Tape Saturation
The tape saturation effect allows for gentle warming up of the sound all the way to screaming distortion. The “warmth” slider adjusts the amount of high-frequency content in the saturation.
Filter
The Filter section offers a choice of Band Pass, High Pass and Low Pass filters.
Delay
The Delay section comes with controls for Amount, Feedback, Delay timing, as well as a switch between standard and diffusion-type delay settings. Diffusion delay is very useful for creating washes and big cinematic soundscapes.
Reverb
The reverb section is simple and allows for control of room size and mix.
EQ
3-band EQ – low, mid and high frequencies, complete with Q control.
Presets
Phonetic comes with 125 ready-made snapshots/presets, including:
Splice Country Nashville Essentials – Modern Country WAV
What kind of country music sample label would this be if we didn’t dedicate a pack to Music City? Home of country music, Nashville, Tennesee’s foundation is deeply rooted in musical tradition. It became a national center for music publishing in the 1800s and the Ryman Auditorium – the “Carnegie Hall of the South” – was built in 1892. The first musical act to embark on a world tour came from (and was supported by) Fisk University, putting Nashville on the map as a global music center. The radio station WSM and its launch of the broadcast later called the Grand Ole Opry was established in 1925. The 1930s saw Jefferson Street transform into a lively hub for music and entertainment. When rock & roll began stealing the global spotlight in the 1950s, the city’s music industry developed the Nashville Sound genre to revive country music sales, replacing the rough honky tonk music that dominated the scene with smooth strings and choruses, sophisticated background vocals, and smooth tempos associated with traditional pop. Throughout the decades since, Nashville’s music scene has evolved, morphed, and spun off several sub-genres and styles of country music. With roots so deep, however, there will always be a certain sound associated with Music City, and this pack captures it.
Born and bred Nashville musicians Kate L. Malone (Sam Hunt, Alana Springsteen, Emma White) and Devin Malone (Keith Urban, Jelly Roll, Carrie Underwood, Ingrid Andress) performed the sounds for this pack. Kate is a producer and songwriter with over ten years of experience in various music industry roles from songwriter to producer and theatrical music director. She has written and produced songs that have appeared in TV shows and movies for ABC Family, Freeform Network, MTV, and Summit Entertainment/20th Century Fox. Kate was also the first female producer ever included in the esteemed ASCAP GPS Program. Devin has played on more than twenty #1 country songs and countless Top 40 County Hits. Focusing on electric guitar, acoustic guitar, pedal steel, dobro, and mandolin, Devin is a sought-after utility player both in recording sessions and as a touring musician.

Larry also discusses various metering options, including VU meters and peak levels, to make sure you’re keeping your levels under control at all times.
Then, after demonstrating the procedure for properly setting input levels, he sets up a good initial level for the kick drum, which will be used as the basis for building our mix. This ensures we’ll have plenty of headroom in the master bus.
