Introduction
In our first video you’ll get an introduction and welcome to the course and your instructor, Mike London. Mike explains this is the ADVANCED course (please watch the Beginner/Intermediate course in this series, if you haven’t already!). This course builds on the core concepts and examples from the first. Using Mike’s expert tuition you’ll be mixing vocals like a pro in no time at all!
In the second introduction video Mike introduces this course’s artist and track: “Stay Here With You” by Coast Club featuring Cat Clark.
Advanced Vocal Tuning
This set of 3 course videos take an in-depth look at the track and the actual vocal comp from it. Mike will take you through each element of the track’s vocals, the recording takes and his process involved in selection of each vocal performance. Mike illustrates how to identify the best parts of each performance and shows you just how he works his magic to combine takes.
Mike then dives into AutoTune’s Graph mode, to identify track pitch and begin to ensure that your vocals match your track’s key perfectly. We’ll also take a look at the Autotune Realtime Advanced plugin along with it’s settings to achieve fast results.
Advanced EQ & Compression
These video takes a closer look at EQ for vocals, specifically on the top end spectrum of the EQ curve. Mike shows a few of his favorite plugins for the all important “air” in a vocal.
Mike also goes deeper into the concept of compression for vocals. We’ll look at a few of the more advanced compressors that sound amazing on vocals, their settings and how to use them for maximum impact.
Multi-Band Compression
We’ve all heard of compression, now learn how to harness powerful multi-frequency band plugins to polish your vocal sound. This video introduces the concept of multi-band compression. Mike discusses what it is and what it can mean for your vocals, looking at a few of his go-to picks.
Resonance Correction
Tame those harsh frequencies and make sure that your vocals sound as smooth as the pro’s do! This part of the course shows Mike covering four specific plugins he uses for fixing resonant frequencies in a vocal, wwo from Sonnox and two from Oeksound.
Saturation Effects
In this section we’ll cover both tape and valve style saturation effects that will give your vocals a whole new depth and feeling. Mike takes a look saturation and it’s importance in coloring a vocal. Take a close look at how 3 different plugins can shape your vocal without EQ or Compression.
Doublers
WWant bigger, fatter sounding vocals? This video explains doubling effects – these chorus style processors will help you add space, body and width to your vocals. Learn what they are and how they can best be used to increase the size of your vocal in a musical way.
Parallel Compression
Mike takes us through the use of parallel compression to help you get extra bite into your in your vocals. Mike explains which plugins he uses, the controls you’ll find on these units, and what they can do for your mix.
Pitched Octaves
This production technique is aimed at creating pitched vocal effects that will give your vocals a deep undertone to your vocals. This popular vocal production trick of pitching vocals up or down an octave can give you an added luxuriance to parts of your vocal tracks. Mike shares of few of his favorite plugins and techniques to achieve this effect.
Harmony – Music Theory
We hit some all important basic music theory that will help you hit those perfect harmonies. Mike sheds some light on the concept of vocal harmony and more importantly some basic music theory to understand how to achieve it.
Vocoders
Mike takes us through the weird and wonderful world of Vocoders. Even if you don’t know the term, you’ll have heard this effect in countless tracks. Mike explains what they are and how they can be used, as well as his favorite plugins used to achieve the exciting sound.
