Sonic Collective Hardanger Fiddle w/ Zosha Warpeha WAV

Found Sound Nation presents this sample pack of experimental Handanger fiddle, a traditional instrument from Norway known for its sympathetic strings and rich overtones. Intimately recorded and sampled by Brooklyn-based musician Zosha Warpeha, the fiddle (more precisely a 10-string Hardanger d’amore) is often employed to evoke the natural world, Nordic landscapes, and mythology. From expansive drones to lilting melodies, the pack incorporates an assortment of extended techniques embracing the tonalities and resonance of the instrument’s sympathetic strings while remaining informed by classical Norwegian technique.

Zosha Warpeha is a Minnesota-born composer and violin player working in a meditative space at the intersection of contemporary improvisation and folk traditions. In 2019, Zosha was awarded a Fulbright for artistic research in Norway, where she explored the Hardanger fiddle tradition as a method of expanding her compositional and improvisational voice. Her work has been supported by the Minnesota State Arts Board, the Jerome Foundation, and the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
